In keeping with the tradition of a dance after the first week of school, Student Council has tentatively planned Carnival for Friday, Aug. 25 on the Pine and Octavia campus.
The date and time are being reviewed as four sports teams from both Convent and Stuart Hall High School are competing that afternoon, making it challenging for those players to make it to the dance at its currently scheduled time.
“Our goal with the first dance of the year is to create an experience that is fun for all students so that they continue to come to events in the future,” Student Body President Owen Fahy ’18 said. “That being said, we would like for all students to have the opportunity to attend.”
Traditionally, freshmen have made up the majority of Carnival’s attendance. Student Council plans to raise upperclassmen numbers to both enhance a sense of community between grades and provide funding for future endeavors.
The Student Council wishes the event will encourage participation from everyone, as they will be offering a variety of activities outside dancing to add to the carnival theme. Plans include games such as corn hole, ring toss and Spike Ball among others throughout the Courtyard.
“Carnival is definitely a dance, but we also plan to have carnival games and other ways for students who don’t like to dance, to still have a good time,” Fahy said.
Drinks and popcorn will be provided, and Phoenix Aquino-Thomas ’18 is scheduled to DJ.
“I’m really excited to DJ,” said Aquino-Thomas. “It’s exciting because I get to contribute to my communityby doing something that I’m passionate about.”
Spirit Director Angel Padilla ’18 will be emceeing the event with Phoenix.
“We hope to have more than 75 percent participation this year, and to really boost school spirit,” Fahy said.
Tickets will be $5 and can be purchased at the door, with no pre-order option available for this event. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the event will conclude at 8 p.m.
