Earlier this year in February, President Donald Trump issued an executive order to eliminate the Presidio Trust, the federal agency that manages one of the most historic parks in San Francisco. The Presidio Trust is the agency responsible for the Presidio and was created back in 1996. The Presidio is a 1,500-acre historic park which dates back centuries, and once served as a military post.
The order issued on February 19th was aimed to “dramatically” downsize the federal government and describes the Trust and several other agencies as “unnecessary”. The Presidio Trust said they are going to continue to operate as normal and that they also have not received regular annual funding from the federal government since 2013, and relies on funding from leasing buildings in the park.
In 2023, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi helped secure $200 million in federal money for maintenance projects in the Presidio. Her office put out this statement about the order: “The Presidio Trust is statutory, and it has been protected from assaults over time by its statutory strength. We will be carefully reviewing the language of the President’s executive order and its purpose.”
After the executive order, the Presidio Trust presented a report on their activities and spending in two weeks. They said for now, services and business will continue to operate as normal.
