City Grazing’s herd of 100 plus adopted goats were back. They were taking action on Lyon and Broadway where they were grazing the hill above the Lyon Street steps. If you miss them, they will no doubt be in a neighborhood near you as they “work” all over the city. City Grazing offers sustainable land management services – goats for hire. The goats don’t make a lot of noise, don’t require a lot of water, don’t produce a lot of methane but do take all of the unwanted vegetation and turn it into topsoil. According to City Grazing, “all of the current herd of over 100 goats are adopted. They include former dairy goats now enjoying happy retirements as grazing animals, rescue goats desperate to find new homes, and goats that would have otherwise been sold for meat production.” The goat’s mission is to lower the risk of urban wildfires by helping to clear ground cover on San Francisco’s hillsides. In addition, they remove weeds, improve soil by converting unwanted plant material into pellets of immediately bioavailable soil nutrients, help promote regrowth of native plants, and help improve community well being. San Francisco residents love seeing the goats in action grazing in our urban settings. The goats have names and personalities, so if you happen to see one of the City Grazing workers nearby, ask them about the herd. Regardless of whether this is your first time meeting the goats, or you await their arrival each Spring, visiting them is guaranteed to bring joy.
