On March 12th, the Academy Awards, colloquially known as The Oscars, were hosted. Previous to the winners being announced, Everything Everywhere All At Once, starring Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, and Ke Huy Quan, and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, was the frontrunner this year with 11 nominations, including awards in major categories, with it being nominated for film of the year, Yeoh being nominated for best actress, and Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis nominated for best supporting actress.

Other frontrunners in this years Oscars included major-studio productions, such as Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis (directed by Baz Luhrmann), Avatar: The Way of the Water, which is 2022’s highest-grossing film, The Fabelmans (directed by Steven Spielberg), and All Quiet on the Western Front (Netflix original), as well as Tár, starring Cate Blanchett, Women Talking, Triangle of Sadness, and The Banshees of Inisherin.

Reporters of The Roundtable sent out a poll a few weeks ago to the Convent & Stuart Hall student body asking two questions: which film they thought was going to win Film of the Year at the Academy Awards, and which film they watched in 2022 that was their favorite.

Based on the responses of the polls, 44.6% of participants agreed that Everything Everywhere All At Once was the most likely to win Film of the Year. In second place, with the decision of 26.2% voters, was Top Gun: Maverick, and Avatar: The Way of the Water in third, with 13.8%.

Based on voter responses, however, Top Gun: Maverick was the most voted as people’s favorite movie, with Everything Everywhere being only one vote behind. Other responses in this category notably included The Menu, starring Anya Taylor Joy, Fantastic Mr. Fox (despite its release over a decade ago), Bullet Train, Pearl, starring Mia Goth, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Glass Onion, as well as various other films released in 2022.

Following the Academy Awards, it turns out that the voter prediction of Everything Everywhere All At Once winning Film of the Year was correct. Additionally, it received a total of 7 Academy Awards, it is now considered the most awarded film in history, and Michelle Yeoh is officially the first Asian woman to be recognized for Best Actor. 2022 was a great year for film, with many new actors, directors, and producers being recognized, with as many as 16 actors this year receiving their first Oscar nomination as well as a number of them achieving their first wins.
