The Pearl of East Asia
Hong Kong, also known as the pearl of East Asia, is located above the South China Sea. I had the opportunity to visit this vibrant and bustling city during New Year’s week.
Upon landing in Chek Lap Kok airport which is located on an island, I already felt this city was something special. Tall mountains surround both the airport and city and there is a comfortable blend between modernity and nature. On New Year’s Eve, I, along with my family, walked around the famous landmark called The Peak 太平山 . Located 552 meters above the city, The Peak offers visitors a magnificent view of the entire Hong Kong skyline as well as the beauty of the many plants and trees on this mountain that give shade on hot summer days.
Hong Kong architecture is very modern. Tall skyscrapers are located on almost every street and some even have lights on the outside of the building that can come together to form images and or words.
“The tall skyscrapers, along with an abundance of malls and shops are amazing.” says Junior Conner Lee. “The food is also delicious.”
A visit to Hong Kong would not be complete if you do not try the local food. Many people enjoy going to cafes that serve international styled Chinese food. For example, macaroni with ham and eggs with buttered toast. Another experience that is essential is to have dim sum while drinking tea. Some classic dishes are siu mai, har gao, and steamed chicken feet. Finally for dinner, grilled or steam fish fried rice, and other stir fry dishes are local must-try delicacies.
With the fusion of both the present and the past, as well as the plethora of food options, Hong Kong truly is a special city.
