On February 2, 2024, the 67 annual Grammys was hosted in Crypto Arena in Los Angeles, California. For the 5th straight year, comedian and talk show host Trevor Noah, hosted the 2025 Grammys. In addition to celebrating great musical accomplishments, the ceremony celebrated musical excellence but also served as a fundraiser. The Grammys raised $7 million for MusiCares Fire Relief to support those affected by recent wildfires in Los Angeles.
In terms of musical awards, the biggest news of the night was Kendrick Lamar winning 3 Grammys with one song, Not Like Us: Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Record of the Year. Additionally, Best Album went to Beyonce’s, “Cowboy Carter.” In a heartfelt speech she thanked Linda Martell, a black country artist, who she wrote a song about in her album called, “The Linda Martell Show”. While amassing 35 Grammy wins, this was her first time winning Album of the Year.
In a nice and touching segment, the Grammys paid tribute to the city of Los Angeles who have been affected by horrendous fires, and honored the late Quincy Jones. The tribute highlighted his influence across multiple different genres such as jazz, pop, and R&B, recognizing his collaborations with artists like Michael Jackson and Ray Charles. As the music industry celebrated his legacy, Jones received a standing ovation. This moment was one of the biggest Grammy highlights as everyone was being brought together. Stevie Wonder, Cynthia Erivo, and Janelle Monáe gave very sweet and great performances celebrating Jones’s long lasting legacy in the music industry.
Even though the Grammys are a music award show, the 2025 Grammys was also used for the acknowledgment of political and social issues. Artist Shakira used her platform to address pressing global concerns, which adds to an ever changing award show. Upon winning the Best Latin Pop Album, Shakira said, “I want to dedicate this award to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country.”
