Super Bowl 59 was played in New Orleans on February 9th. The Philadelphia Eagles who are the NFC champions faced off against the Kansas City Chiefs who are the AFC champions. This was a historic game as the chiefs had won the past two Super Bowls and were looking to win their third straight. While this was a matchup that almost nobody wanted, many fans in the Bay Area wanted the Eagles to win because of the fact that the Chiefs narrowly beat the San Francisco 49ers last year.
Junior Ryder Hsieh said, “I didn’t really like either team, but I wanted to see the Chiefs lose.”
The Eagles ultimately played the better game and crushed the chiefs, 40-22, with most of the Chiefs points coming during the late fourth quarter. Cooper DeJean who is a rookie cornerback and Josh Sweat allowed for the Eagle’s defense to completely shut down the Kansas City offense and denied a Super Bowl three-peat. The Eagles defense was the highlight of the team as they kept the Chiefs scoreless until late in the third quarter–something that hasn’t been done in recent years.
In total, the Eagles sacked Mahomes 6 times (the most of his career) including 2.5 sacks by Josh Sweat. The Eagle’s defense also forced two interceptions with one of them being a pick 6 by Cooper DeJean.
On offense the Eagles were also dominant. Jalen Hurts, who was the Super Bowl MVP, threw for 221 yards and rushed for 72 more. DeVonta Smith and Aj Brown each had a touchdown and combined for 120 yards of receiving. However, offensive player of the year Saquon Barkley had a quieter game with only 57 rushing yards, yet still broke the all time rushing record with 2,478 yards throughout the season and postseason.
On both sides of the ball, the Eagles out played and out coached the Chiefs. Through grit and hard work, the Eagles gave themselves their second Super Bowl win in franchise history.
