Nov. 4, 2025, marked an important off-year election day that would give citizens and analysts a better understanding of where the country stands politically. Key elections took place in Virginia and New Jersey for governor, as well as the highly anticipated mayoral election in New York City. Democrats won across the board, even in a governor’s seat previously held by a Republican. Additionally, New York City elected a Democratic socialist for mayor, who’s also the city’s first Muslim and second-youngest mayor. Overall, this election day marks a significant shift towards the Democratic Party, nullifying Trump’s gains in the 2024 election. Also, this election day shows that the Democratic Party is recovering from its shattering loss in 2024 and is becoming more resilient under the second Trump presidency.
Abigail Spanberger convincingly won the governor’s race in Virginia, winning over 57% of the vote to beat the Republican candidate Winsome Earle-Sears, who was also the former lieutenant governor. Unlike the previous Virginia governor, Spanberger was leading in the polls heading into the election and was able to ride that success to the Governor’s Mansion in Richmond. Prior to the election, Spanberger was a member of the House of Representatives in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District since 2019, and she was also an intelligence officer in the CIA before that. Spanberger ran her campaign on policies based on affordability and creating a state that can withstand bombardments from the Trump administration. Specifically, she aims to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable by enforcing price transparency laws, allowing Virginians to choose the pharmacies where they get their prescription drugs, cutting regulations to speed up housing production, and making Virginia energy independent by supporting local energy production. These policies and many more are a part of Spanberger’s plan that was so compelling for Virginians. Incredibly, Spanberger was the first woman to be elected governor of Virginia, a massive achievement for women in American politics.
Ever since he won the Democratic nomination in June, Zohran Mamdani has hit the American political scene like an asteroid, creating an impact that was felt beyond New York City. He was able to beat prominent figures in the city and even the former governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo. This election was highly anticipated for the fact that it was a political upset, but also for the fact that he’s a Democratic socialist and the first Muslim mayor of New York City. In fact, this election was so notable that it drew the president’s attention back to his home city, saying he will be paying close attention. The president also drastically differs from Mamdani politically and has even threatened him before he became mayor. Mamdani’s policies, which are polarizing, are considered far left on the American political spectrum, even been called a communist. Some of his policies consist of making public transit free and more efficient, starting government-owned grocery stores, and freezing rent. These and most of Mamdani’s policies involve government intervention to make living more affordable and make a city where people from varying income brackets can thrive. However, these policies have been eye-opening for many reasons: good and bad. Some people have compared Mamdani’s policies to those employed in Sweden, Denmark, and other countries that have the Nordic model, which promotes a high standard of living. Conversely, critics have been able to highlight that these policies have also been utilized in failed states such as Venezuela, and only work in Nordic countries because of the culture. One thing everyone can agree on is that New York is headed in a new direction that is exciting for some but ominous for others.
Further erasing Trump’s gains, Mikie Sherrill was able to beat Republican Jack Ciattarelli by earning over 56% of the vote. This was a huge relief for Democrats because New Jersey had been slowly shifting to the right. Trump made up ground in the state compared to previous years, and Jack Ciattarelli was only three percentage points short of winning in a nail-biting election when he ran for governor in 2021. Mikie Sherrill was previously a member of the House of Representatives in New Jersey’s 11th District and a Naval Academy graduate. Sherrill ran on policies such as tax incentives for builders, assisting first-time home buyers, declaring a state of emergency on energy, and expanding universal pre-K. Sherrill was able to successfully balance building upon the previous governor’s policies, while also deviating from them to incite the idea of bringing positive change to New Jersey and expand her political identity. Of all the states, New Jersey was expected to be the closest, as Republicans looked to flip the state eventually. Sherrill’s convincing victory shows how people still have faith in the Democratic Party, and the party is coming back from the horrendous election day losses in 2024.
Senior Benny Moosbrugger said, “I’m not super engaged in politics, but it’s important that the Democratic Party won because it helps to balance out the Republican gains from last year. It’s important for bipartisanship and makes sure the government won’t be one-sided.” This highlights some of the sentiment subsequent to the Democratic victories on Nov. 4, and hope for the future of the country.
All in all, the off-year election day was captivating and featured substantial victories for the Democratic Party in a year dominated by a political shift in Washington. These victories for Democrats are a warning for Republicans that they still have strong political opposition, and they have to earn swing voters’ support as opposed to counting on it regardless. Even though Democrats are rejuvenated and excited for the future, the biggest test to determine the party’s future will be the midterm elections in 2026. In spite of these wins, the Republican Party still has firm control over all three branches of government and will not be challenged until the midterm elections, which look to be tumultuous with the congressional redistricting. Overall, these Democratic victories may be able to spark change for the Democratic Party and pave the way for the party.
