This January 20th, most people will be thinking about Donald Trump’s inauguration. However, it’s the same day as the highly anticipated college football National Championship game between Notre Dame and Ohio State. This game is between two strong teams, Ohio State with a dynamic wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, and quarterback Will Howard has been lighting it up this year in the big ten accumulating a record of 13-2 overall. On the other side of the ball, Notre Dame has been overperforming to earn a record of 14-1. Notre Dame has play caller Riley Leonard who consistently and successfully gets the ball to Jaden Goathouse. However, Ohio State’s menacing defense will make this a tough and interesting game for number five ranked Notre Dame.
“I feel like Ohio State is going to win, just because of how good they always are and how they have performed in the later parts of the season,” says Junior Israel Beyene. Despite being ranked 6th in the nation, they have beaten teams above their standings such as number three ranked University of Texas and number one ranked University of Oregon. Ohio State has frequently been a power house in the last decade with no shortage of talented players. This success has not been enough to push them over the edge of being a national championship winning team since 2014.
“I want Notre Dame to win, but I’m not sure”, says Junior Antonio Ruby when asked about who he’s supporting to win the game. Notre Dame haven’t won a National Championship since 1988. Notre Dame football is a relatively prestigious program, but hasn’t been in the CFP(College Football Playoffs) since the 2012/13 season.
These two College Football powerhouses are set to face off on Monday, January 20th at 4:30 PST and will be one of the most watched sporting events in the country and the world.
